Color for the Heidering Correctional Facility

Brightly colored contract furniture series by Brunner create a friendly atmosphere in the Heidering Correctional Facility.

The architect Josef Hohensinn from Graz planned the Heidering Correctional Facility with broad views of the surrounding landscape, lots of light and color. For the furnishings, he picked brightly colored contract furniture from Brunner that is an optimal fit for the architecture – and placed it in all areas from the solitary confinement cells to the chapel.
The most modern prison in Berlin is in Brandenburg and has had room for 648 male prisoners since the spring of 2013. Compact structures, short distances, transparent design – those are characteristics of the new building. Hohensinn’s task was to build a prison that makes humane enforcement of sentences possible and creates optimal working conditions for the personnel.
The so-called prison thoroughfare, a glass corridor, connects the three sections where the prisoners are housed with the work and sport areas, the school, the multi-purpose hall, and the administration buildings. The inmates are allowed to enter the unheated corridor freely. It allows them to perceive the seasons of the year and gives a broad view of the open area outside. Lots of glass and natural shades of color create a light, friendly atmosphere in the entire building. And the brightly colored seating furniture from Brunner also contributes to that atmosphere. It is used in all areas of the Heidering Correctional Facility. The three parts of the facility have different color schemes. To go with them, the architect Hohensinn has furnished the cells with the robust “twin“ plastic chair in the colors teal, violet, and apple. And in the kitchenettes in the individual living quarters, there are lava-colored chairs, also from the “twin” series. For the dining hall, the school and the administration rooms as well as for the multi-purpose hall, he has chosen the “linos” skid-base chair in white or lava. The two-colored “fina” chairs, complemented by “we_talk” barstools and “torino” standing tables, create a friendly atmosphere for meeting relatives in the visitor areas. The rooms for long visits are furnished with comfortable armchairs from the “finalounge” series. Photos: Brunner
